Byte Back invited the community to its new office

It was a chance to check out Byte Back's space, and meet community leaders.

After throwing a community event at their new training space, Byte Back has officially kick-started its new HQ.

Last week, the technology education nonprofit hosted workshops and lectures introduce students to IT, digital security, and programming. Called “DC Community Tech Day,” the event was held at Byte Back’s new NoMa office. Sponsored by iStrategy Labs, the event hosted around 100 attendees last Friday, according to Byte Back communications director Yvette Scorse.

“Many times in D.C., we see some diversity in the tech community, but opportunities are still so limited for people with low education levels and people who have experienced poverty,” Scorse told us in an e-mail. “Bringing in volunteers who actually work in tech and seeing them connect with underserved people who are new to tech is a really special experience.”

Until earlier this year, ByteBack had been headquartered in Brookland for two decades, and as we reported last year, helped teach 1,000 D.C. students in 2015 alone. This was one of the first events held at their new location on North Capitol Street near Union Station.

Speakers at the event last week included DC Chief Technology Officer Archana Vermulapalli, Oluseyi Akinyode from Social Tables, Otho Lyon from Cloudera, Inc., and Lizzie Ellis and Allison Spittel from General Assembly.

For those who missed it, never fear. Scorse shared that Byte Back is planning make the Community Day an annual event.

Byte Back will welcome the D.C. tech community again next week Thursday for a grand opening party at their new office. For more information, or to view other upcoming events, check out their website.
