Codeland 2017, the CodeNewbie-organized coding conference for, well, newbies, takes the stage in New York City on April 21-22 and some familiar #dctech faces are among those presenting.

  • Kate Rabinowitz, founder of DataLensDC, will give the very appropriately-titled talk “Open Data + You = Better Cities.” As a self-taught coder who has become a central figure in all things D.C. open data, Rabinowitz knows well what its like to be a true beginner. “I had times where I was so lost I didn’t even know what to Google or I had problems with seemingly unfindable solutions,” she told Technical.ly in an email in 2015. These days, as one of the organizers of Tech Lady Hackathon, Rabinowitz is committed to helping others make the same climb she did.
  • Valerie Woolard Srinivasan, an engineer at Slate’s Panoply podcast network, will talk about how “Good Fences Make Good Communities.” As self-described musical theater and podcast lover, she’ll focus on how good security is key in building great online communities around your products.
  • Johnny Ray Austin, former director of technology at iStrategyLabs, senior engineering manager at Social Tables and current tech fellow at Capital One, will appear on a panel about how to balance life with learning to code. We hope he’ll give a shoutout to his love of a good backyard BBQ. Allison McMillan, a D.C.-based Rails dev, will be on the same panel.

Codeland is a conference specifically targeted at people who are learning to code — sound like you?
