Mapbox, the D.C.-based mapping software we just profiled yesterday, announced today it has raised a $52.55 million Series B round.
“This is more than just creating the best mapping platform,” wrote CEO Eric Gundersen on the company’s blog. “We’re building tools that are going to change how people move around cities, how scientists understand the planet, and how applications doing anything with location.”
Mapbox closed a $10 million Series A round in October 2013. Before that, the company had been essentially bootstrapped ever since its founding in 2003, as a web strategy consultant for nonprofits called Development Seed.
Mapbox’s API is now used by companies including Foursquare, GitHub and Pinterest. Earlier this month, the company announced a partnership with MapQuest.
