Since its launch by Nathan Field and and Jason Lombardo in 2018, the Wilmington History Society (WHS) has offered free monthly meetups featuring talks everything from Howard High School teachers fighting KKK propaganda in 1916 to explosive Chancery Court cases, always downstairs at the Chelsea Tavern on Market Street.
Those meetups were paused (and a podcast was launched) after the COVID-19 lockdown in March.
On Aug. 5 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., the monthly event makes it return with a Zoom event featuring local historian Bill Knightly, who will give a 20-minutes talk about his research on Wilmington in the Revolutionary War, followed by questions and an informal discussion.
Attendees are encouraged to listen to Knightly’s guest appearance on the WHS’s podcast episode “George Washington and the Revolutionary War Comes to Delaware.”
Field assures Wilmington history buffs that the Society isn’t going anywhere: “I’m totally committed to sustaining and growing the group over the long term, no matter how long COVID lasts,” he said in an email to followers. “On that note, I’m putting together a committee that runs it and adds new elements to build up local pride and Wilmington community spirit beyond just the in-person events we’d been having before.”
