In 2012, information and technology jobs in New York City paid out $30 billion in private sector wages, second only to a massive $90 billion from the financial sector and just ahead of healthcare, according to a high profile report backed by Mayor Bloomberg [PDF].
Spinning out of the recession, the city had 262,000 IT jobs last year, an 11 percent bump since 2007, as the Verge reported, and that impact is attracting black and Hispanic workers and becoming more geographically inclusive too.
“While most of these jobs are in Manhattan, Brooklyn’s tech sector grew faster from 2007 to 2012 than in any other urban center except for San Francisco. Tech employment in Brooklyn grew by 24 percent while wages grew by 54 percent. There was a noticeable impact from the $604 million acquisition of MakerBot, a 3D printing company based in downtown Brooklyn.”
