1 in 4 of all jobs in Baltimore-Towson area are in STEM [REPORT]

More than 280,000 jobs in the Baltimore area count as STEM jobs, according to a new Brookings Institution report.

Jobs in STEM fields comprise 23.1 percent of the job share in the Baltimore-Towson area, or 281,730 jobs, according to a new report from the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings Institution.
Read the report here.
The report, “The Hidden STEM Economy,” bills itself as a new kind of STEM study, primarily because it takes into account jobs that don’t require a bachelor’s degree and what are traditionally thought of as blue-collar and technical jobs — like construction and maintenance workers and health technicians — and counts them toward the overall STEM field. The nationwide study counted 26 million STEM jobs.
Other findings:

  • Baltimore-Towson ranks as the eighth largest metropolitan area with respect to its share of STEM workers.
  • About 43 percent of local STEM jobs require no more than an associate’s degree.
  • The national report found that metro areas with “higher STEM knowledge” have lower overall unemployment rates.
