N3rd Street welcomed its newest tenant last week: the Philadelphia Public Interest Information Network, or PPIIN.
The nonprofit journalism outfit, whose official name is still in the works (because, yes, it’s a mouthful), has taken residency on the 7th floor of the building that houses Indy Hall, said PPIIN CEO Neil Budde. Previously, the small PPIIN team worked out of Temple University.
The initial PPIIN team will be composed of 6-8 staffers, plus some interns, freelancers and contractors, Budde said. The group is not sharing the space with anyone else right now, but Budde said it will consider opening its doors to freelancers.
PPIIN aims to produce local news coverage and open data tools (see: lobbying data web app Lobbying.ph). It also manages open data portal OpenDataPhilly.org, though Budde emphasizes that the portal is community-owned.
