New MD law makes talking on the phone while driving a $75 offense

Before Tuesday, talking on a mobile phone while driving in Maryland was a secondary offense, which meant that a driver had to “first be detained for another offense, such as speeding or negligent driving,” before being ticketed for a talking-while-driving offense.
But a new state law that went into effect Oct. 1 makes talking on the phone while driving a primary offense worth $75, if police catch you. The financial penalty increases with each subsequent offense.
