While the last thing many of us want to do is plaster our driver’s-license photos across social media, new drivers are often so excited to share the news that they put themselves at risk without thinking about it — by snapping a photo of their new license and posting it to social media.
Consider: Your driver’s license number can in some cases be used to open a credit card. Your birth date is often used to confirm your identity along with your name, and sharing your home address on social media is never a good idea.

The Delaware DMV’s #SafeSelfie campaign aims to educate new drivers about the importance of keeping their private information safe, while providing an alternative for the those who want to share the news on social media. At each Delaware DMV you’ll find a “Safe Selfie Zone” with a photo backdrop for taking selfies that helps new drivers share the news without putting their license information online.
The idea for the Safe Selfie Zone came about when Dover DMV employee Willie Goldsboro noticed new drivers posting their licenses on social media. He approached Laura Russum, a DMV communications employee, about the issue. Russum designed the Safe Selfie Zones and designated the hashtags #SafeSelfie and #NewDEDriver as part of the awareness campaign.
