Ten ways to spend MLK Day in Delaware

Wondering what to do on your "day on"? Here's a helpful roundup.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is almost upon us – and if you haven’t made plans yet, it’s not too late.

MLK Day officially became a national day of service, in addition to its status as a Federal holiday, in 1994. The third Monday of every January, schools are closed and many employees get the day off, but it’s not just another three-day weekend. Citizens are encouraged to go out and participate in the community in a meaningful way.

If your employer gave you a service option for MLK Day but nothing specific to do, here are a few options to make the most of the day. Most are suitable for kids, so everyone can get involved:

A Day of Service at Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington

Join One Village Alliance and Raising Kings for a day honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., including mentorship opportunities and free tours of the collections.

Keeping the Dream Alive at Grace UMC, Wilmington

A short worship service will be followed by a panel discussion with the theme “Race and the City” and the question: “How Can We Keep Dr. King’s Dream Alive in 2019?”

“Still Dreaming” Peace March and Celebration, Wilmington

The 7th Annual Martin Luther King Peace March & Community Celebration start at the William “Hicks” Anderson Community Center at 2 p.m. and ends with a gathering at the Be Ready Church on 4th Street.

The Black History in the Making Awards Gala, Wilmington

One Village Alliance hosts this evening event at Delaware Art Museum honoring the achievements of African Americans in the community.

MLK Day Celebration at Wyoming UMC, Dover

Speakers will follow a service of prayer, spiritual choirs and congregational singing.

MLK Day at Heritage State Park, Dover

Free programs include civil rights-focused tours of the Johnson Victrola Museum, The Old State House, Legislative Hall and a Tales of Slavery and Freedom Walking Tour

“Reflections” – Letter from Birmingham Jail at Newark UMC, Newark

Excerpts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s famous letter will be read, as participants reflect on his legacy.

MLK Day speaker at Wilmington Hospital, Wilmington

Health advocate Charles Johnson will give a talk about personal loss, maternity healthcare and legislation to help mothers and babies.

MLK Day of Service at Springer Middle School, Wilmington

Springer MS will be collecting donations of books, new/gently used clothing and nonperishable food from the community from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Delaware Nature Society’s MLK Day of Service Camp, Wilmington

Have to work but want the kids to get involved? This “day off camp” teaches kids aged 6-8 about King’s life and teachings while they help to clean up the marsh and gardens at the DuPont Environmental Education Center.
