Manufacturing can grow here, NYC: The Pratt Institute’s Adam Friedman

Brooklyn has a lot of old giant factory buildings that just need to go through a smart conversion. Loose policy is in the way, according to one local leader.

The Pratt Center for Community Development director, Adam Friedman, says there is lots of room for manufacturing to grow here, we just need smarter policy. He also says the old days when factories wanted big campuses out in the middle of nowhere are over. In a conversation with BKLYNR, he articulates both the opportunities he sees, why the demand is stronger that the public thinks and articulates a vision for growth that’s gentler on communities:

There’s also a shift in decision-making by business owners, who are deciding where to locate their business on other factors now. They want to be at the center of their market, they want to have contact with their consumers, they want to be in the middle of the talent pool that creates new designs and is more highly skilled, and they want to reduce their transportation costs as well.
