U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester released a video letting Delawareans know where she stands on the issue of the Trump Administration’s policies on asylum seekers, and how she is taking action as a member of Congress.

“Let me be clear,” she says in the video, “the policy of separating innocent children from their families is cruel, inhumane and inconsistent with our values. Let us also be clear that seeking asylum is not illegal, and President Trump and his administration have the power to end this crisis unilaterally without a single vote from Congress.” Trump signed an executive order ending the practice of separating children from their families on Wednesday.

Blunt Rochester spoke about joining other House members in releasing the Keeping Families Together Act (which was crafted prior to Trump’s Wednesday retreat on the issue). “This bill will prohibit the Department of Homeland Security from continuing this disturbing practice, end the prosecution of asylum seekers, and create an action plan to reunite the more than 2,000 separated families,” she said.

She also said she will oppose two immigration bills expected to be put before the House soon. “Neither of these bills balances border security with our humanitarian responsibilities, and I will oppose both of them,” said Blunt Rochester. “I am disappointed that the Speaker and Republican leadership have pursued a closed process, and I encourage them to allow a vote on the bipartisan immigration bills that Democrats and Republicans have worked on together.”
