Here’s the situation: a winter blizzard has pushed Maryland into a state of emergency, but unknown hackers are thwarting the state’s relief efforts.
It’s a fictitious state of affairs, but it’s the setup for next week’s cybersecurity challenge at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Eight teams of college students from across the Mid-Atlantic, including four from Maryland, will defend computer systems deployed for blizzard response and relief efforts from a phony group of “cyber terrorists” played by professional cybersecurity workers.
The four Maryland-based teams:
- Anne Arundel Community College
- Towson University
- University of Maryland, Baltimore County
- Capitol College
“Operation Cyber Blizzard” will be a four-day event, and the winner of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition will go on to the national competition in Texas at the end of April.
