Interactive maps, data visualizations and plain-language information guides are some of the features of the newly launched website for the City of Philadelphia’s Department of Public Health.

From finding a health center to getting the latest statistics on the opioid crisis, the new website gives Philadelphians access to around 100 services. It’s the result of a year-long push, conducted alongside the Office of Open Data and Digital Transformation, to bring the department’s site in line with the overall website redesign process.

“We were so glad to have built such a strong partnership with the Department of Public Health. Their programs and services are vital to building a healthy, vibrant city,” said Tim Wisniewski, the City’s outgoing open data chief. “We look forward to our continued collaborations.”

The department and ODDT worked together previously to produce an online tool called the Community Health Explorer, an interactive dashboard that offers data visualizations on Philly’s health indicators.

“Being able to present critical health information in a format that works with how the public actually uses the internet today has been a key goal of ours for a long time,” said James Garrow, the health department’s director of communications. “Working with ODDT has enabled us to realize this goal and to build a website that meets the needs of Philadelphians and gives them access to all of the dozens of services the Health Department offers.”
