The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance’s old online calendar was, by Internet standards, fit for one of its member museums.
“It had’t been redesigned since 2008,” executive director Jeannie Howe said. “It just didn’t reflect [events] in a way that was going to help us develop awareness.”
On Thursday, the group officially unveiled its revamped calendar, Culture Fly, at an event at Area 405 in Station North. The rebuilt calendar allows GBCA members and others to submit events, and allows members to easily feature them. The calendar replaces the Baltimore Fun Guide.
The GBCA’s members include 300 institutions and individuals, including the Baltimore Museum of Art, CenterStage and the Enoch Pratt Free Library.
The new calendar is also responsively designed for mobile.
“You don’t have to download an app. You can go straight to the site,” Howe said. “You can walk out of the Walters [Art Museum], for example, and you can hit a feature to bring up restaurants nearby.”
In addition to member events, Howe said the goal is to include other events like sports and community festivals.
The process to revamp the site began roughly a year and a half ago. David London, the group’s program and marketing manager and the lead architect on the new calendar, said his first days on the job 13 months ago were spent in meetings about the project.
He said the new calendar is much more dynamic, including what he called an “Amazon feature,” using an algorithm to list related events at the bottom of each event page.
“Now the calendar pulls all events that are free and half priced,” he said. And on a member organization’s page, “It lists their upcoming events from the calendar.”
It’s also easier and less time-consuming for member groups to use, London said.
Only members’ events will be pulled into the new Culture Flyer, the members-only email that replaces the former FunSaver emails and will include exclusive deals.
