Last summer, Zorah Rothwell and Amir Carter started working for The Warehouse, a teen-led project by REACH Riverside that includes a coworking and service delivery space on Thatcher Street in Wilmington, as part of the first cohort of the Dual School Summer Youth Program at 1313 Innovation. With cohort 2 underway, they returned in the hopes of recruiting some new young people to help with planning monthly events for the community.
“Last year from June to August, we were prototyping things we would do with The Warehouse with Zack [Jones, Director of Dual School],” said Rothwell. “It included building a portfolio and an end-of-the year presentation to introduce The Warehouse and bring more awareness to it.”
“[The Warehouse] was our first collaboration,” said Jones. “We’d just finished our second Dual School cohort and weren’t sure what we were going to do for the summer, so that became the project.”
The project wound up continuing after summer was over.
“During the school year we got hired to run a pilot for near-peer mentoring at Kingswood, Kuumba and Great Oaks at the CEB Building,” said Carter. “We had internal teams, which was their dance teacher and their film teacher. We also had external programs, which were the workout program, Drama Kids and Multiplying Out.”
On Saturday, June 29, there will be a screening of “When They See Us,” Ava DuVernay’s Netflix miniseries about the Exonerated Five, also known as Central Park Five, at Kingswood Community Center in Riverside. The case has been at the center of an ongoing dialogue on race, justice and mass incarceration. After the screening, there will be a discussion featuring lawyers, formerly incarcerated people in the community and advocates, including:
- Judge William Chapman, Chief Diversity Officer, Director of Pro Bono Services and Senior Counsel for Potter Anderson Corroon
- Alanna Farber, Expungement and Post-Disposition Coordinator/Assistant Public Defender for the State of Delaware
- Tasha Moore, Leaderships Development Director for Network Delaware and community activist advocating youth and mental health
- Sgt. Fray Lynch-Coleman of the WPD
The five-hour screening will start at 12 noon; Discussion will be held from 5-6 (community members are welcome to attend just the discussion).
