In October 2014, just days before Muriel Bowser was elected, then-Mayor Vincent Gray created an open gov advisory board to “evaluate the District’s progress towards meeting the requirements” of Gray’s open data directive.
At the time, the concern was that the advisory board might might not survive under the new mayor.
These concerns weren’t entirely unfounded. But now, in Tuesday’s whirlwind of open gov-related announcements, Mayor Bowser proclaimed the group “revived.” The advisory board “will be a forum for direct feedback from stakeholders,” according to a statement.
The new group will have 16 members versus the old group’s 15. Eight of those members will be representatives of District agencies (though it is unclear which ones) and the other eight will be “Public Members.”
Bowser named her picks for the public members on Tuesday. The list includes Justin Grimes from Code for DC and Kathryn Pettit, both members of the original group under Gray, as well as Hear Me Code founder Shannon Turner and tech community activist Aliya Rahman, among others.
After the announcement, some members of the new group expressed their excitement via social media:
