Monday morning found Charlie O’Donnell waxing nostalgic for the old days of Brooklyn tech. Back when there was one main NY Tech Meetup, back when holiday parties were at Squarespace and you would run into Kortina of Venmo or David from Tumblr, back when spaces didn’t charge for use and everything wasn’t fully professionalized.
Brooklyn’s top venture capitalist and founding partner of Brooklyn Bridge Ventures says in the post, Finding Community in NYC Tech Again, that one of his 2018 goals is to “help make NYC tech feel smaller again, and more connected.”
To that end he’s starting up a meeting of every startup in New York which raised its first $500,000 this year.
In his post, O’Donnell writes, “Whatever the case, it’s hard to figure out where to tell someone to go in NYC’s tech and startup community if they want to meet up with awesome people doing cool stuff.”
To this, we would note that he might have been cheerfully surprised by the wonderfully intelligent, creative and fun community that came out to our Technical.ly Brooklyn Awards last week. O’Donnell might also enjoy a running tag for articles here at Technical.ly Brooklyn where you can see every piece we’ve labeled “Interesting People Doing Cool Things,” which are almost the exact words of what he’s looking for.
O’Donnell concludes by writing “NYC can be a huge platform for anyone to make an impact on the world, but it would be great if it could still feel like a neighborhood you grew up in as well.”
