If you travel up to Dumbo from the east, the streetscape from Brooklyn Navy Yard‘s entrance on Cumberland Street until you get to Navy Street, rarely feels active. Thinking specifically about Commodore Barry Park across the street and the public housing at the corner of Navy and Flushing, that area is an opportunity to better connect Dumbo and Navy Yard in the spirit of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle.
Fortunately that area will be the subject of a $100 million project and the nonprofit that runs the facility is on its third try to make it happen, according to Crain’s.
The plan sounds like it’s geared to put in a grocery store and more offices, perhaps that would take some of the rent pressure off of Dumbo? Will development mean that the awful wall on Flushing will come down for that stretch? It’s not clear, but we can only hope.
The area in question is called Admiral’s Row:
The Admiral’s Row development will also allow the Navy Yard to add about 127,000 square feet of office and industrial space. That square footage will largely be on the second floor of a new building that will house the supermarket on its ground floor.
Admiral’s Row is named for the stately, but now badly deteriorated houses at the site that once housed the base’s top naval brass. Those buildings have decayed to the point where they will have to be razed, Mr. Ehrenberg said. But two structures, one of the houses and also a historic lumber shed are required to be fully refurbished as part of the RFP. Those could be home to shops or restaurants in the new development, he said.
