The first floors of NYU’s massive new building at 370 Jay St. in Downtown Brooklyn are now occupied, as the Center for Urban Science & Progress (CUSP) moved in this week.

The more than 500,000-square-foot building will effectively double the footprint of NYU’s Downtown Brooklyn presence. Tisch and the  Tandon School of Engineering will take over 370 Jay St. The former headquarters of the Metropolitan Transit Authority will now be home to urban planners, engineers, video game developers, startups and computer scientists connected with the university.

NYU CUSP is in the first two floors of the still unfinished 13-story building that stood vacant for more than a decade. The university expects the entire building to be finished in 2019.

According to NYU, the renovated building will include many ecological and efficiency upgrades, including “a high performance roof and windows, sustainable furniture, water saving fixtures, a dedicated outdoor air system for heat recovery, an advanced metering and control system, thermal ice storage, and high efficiency boilers and heaters.”

370 Jay will even have a “microturbine” that will produce up to a megawatt of energy to power the building.
