Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled reporters, is the message Cosmo Lee has to New York’s journalists.
The coworking space owner announced Tuesday morning that he would offer local journalists $1 a month desks for the duration of the winter at his new coworking space, Park Slope Desk.
“It’s important to have these people covering these local issues,” Lee told us by phone Tuesday morning. “I know it’s a tough environment to survive in economically and I have a place that could offer help for them.”
Lee said the offer is not just for the dozens of reporters laid off in the recent DNAinfo/Gothamist purge, but any reporter covering a local beat.
Park Slope Desk opened at the beginning of November in a 2,500 square foot space at 7th Ave. and 11th St. in Park Slope, with room for 50 desks, according to Lee. He owns the building, which is a storefront, rather than the converted industrial spaces many other Brooklyn coworking spaces inhabit. He has owned the building since 1993. For the last 11 years, it was Applewood restaurant.
“I had a need for my own for office but I didn’t need the whole space, so I thought a coworking space could be a good idea because there isn’t one in all of central Park Slope,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of mobile and remote workers here, so I thought there could be a need for that in the community.”
So far, Lee says, no one has taken him up yet on the offer yet this morning, but he’s hoping some local press like this gets the offer in front of some reporters.-30-
