Less than two weeks after launching its crowdfunding campaign, Greenpoint music discovery website the Hype Machine reached its goal of 1,000 monthly supporters. Once the goal was reached, it updated to 3,000 monthly supporters.

According to the site, 1,000 monthly supporters “is the first step towards Hype Machine becoming a sustainable service.” The 3,000 monthly supporters “will allow us to continue developing Hype Machine.”

We at Technical.ly were surprised to see the number of monthly supporters update, and reached out to Hype Machine founder Anthony Volodkin to find out what number will actually make the company solvent.

“It’s huge to have so much support from our community,” Volodkin wrote in an email. “1,000 supporters is the first step in the campaign. … Much like a typical Patreon/Kickstarter campaigns, there are several goals in this campaign. At 3,000 subscribers, we’d be reaching very close to sustainability, at 5,000 we’d likely be able to invite an additional part-time collaborator to work together with us.”

Volodkin said he didn’t think supporters would be surprised to see the number update, and didn’t think people had donated with the expectation that 1,000 monthly subscribers would be the finish line.

“We’ll probably update the page to include additional stretch goals for clarity, though we haven’t seen anyone being confused about this,” he wrote. “The 1,000 number was always discussed as being the first step towards sustainability, vs. something that fully addresses the challenges. I do wish it was enough though!”
