Kickstarter is hosting a big party for Brooklyn

Do tech companies always detract from their communities? No way.

Brooklyn’s tech icon (sorry, Etsy) is throwing a big, free party this summer in Fort Greene Park. It’s the Kickstarter Summer Festival 2016 and will include games, food, performances, installations and workshops.

The festival promises a “life-sized game of Exploding Kittens, guided virtual reality meditation on Oculus Rift, Royal Palms shuffleboard fun, Keap Candles workshop, [and] performances by House of Yes.”

It’s cool that Kickstarter is reaching out to companies and projects that got off the ground on Kickstarter, such as Keap. We wrote about Keap last November, when its founders decided they wanted to change the way the candle industry works, by selling online, direct to consumer. Based in Industry City, Keap was founded by two former Google employees.

Exploding Kittens is a card game (and now app) that was one of the greatest successes in Kickstarter’s history, raising more than $8 million.

So, kudos to Kickstarter for creating an event for the benefit of Brooklyn, and kudos for making it free and interesting. This is a great example of how tech companies can be an asset to the places where they’re located, and not a detractor.

This was not a sponsored post, we swear.
