The Bushwick freelance newsroom is up and running

It's called Study Hall, and founder Kyle Chayka already has 10 members.

The newsroom for freelance reporters we wrote about this summer is now open for business, full of people and looking to expand, its founder, Kyle Chayka, said.

“We have 5 people in here at this very second and 10 members total; we can probably fit 2-3 more maximum,” wrote Chayka, who, if the semicolon didn’t tip you off, is a freelance writer himself.

The space is called Study Hall, and most of the members came to the space by way of Twitter, he said. Now Chayka and his team are working on a digital platform to have an online space for collaboration between writers who use the space.

The idea behind the space is to have an office for freelance writers and reporters, whose working the phones and unusual hours might not work as well in a more traditional coworking space.

“The same as any usual newsroom, it could be a space for collaboration and bouncing ideas off each other,” Chayka said this summer. “That doesn’t usually happen with freelancers.”

Chayka writes about technology and culture. He previously worked in a coworking space in Bushwick, but sharing a room with graphic designers, coders and other people who might prefer to work in silence was not an environment suited to his line of work.

“We named the company Study Hall, since that’s a place we’re all used to getting work done,” Chayka explained. “Plus, we want the space and company as a whole to feel very approachable and familiar.”

He’s planning on opening up a similar location, probably in South Brooklyn, when he can. Interested writers can drop him a line here.
