Automatic Studios wants to teach moviemaking to underprivileged kids

At a recent Made in NY Media Center demo day, founder Ché Chisholm pitched investors on her company's new nonprofit arm.

Twice a year, the Made in NY Media Center puts some of its incubator companies in front of a small group of venture investors. We're profiling three companies that stood out during last week's pitch event. This is the first of three stories.

Automatic Studios is looking to fund a new nonprofit wing. Founder Ché Chisholm, an HBO Sports alum, explained how her current program teaches young people about the collaborative process of making movies. Kids write, direct, shoot and edit films using professional equipment. They even act out all the roles.

By the third day of working with the kids, Chisholm said, the moviemaking machine pretty much runs itself.

Automatic makes its money from classes, summer workshops and parties. Chisholm is launching a nonprofit arm to bring those same offerings to underprivileged schools via a classroom in a bus. Her presentation was aimed at soliciting donations for that part of the organization, not investments in the company as a whole.

Chisholm hopes to bring the program to schools throughout the Tri-State area.
