New York coworking spaces are raising money for Nepal

On May 6, local coworking spaces will turn free desks into donation engines.

Coworking sites across Manhattan and Brooklyn are banding together to raise funds for Nepal following the deadly earthquake there. Coworking will be “pay what you wish” on May 6 at the locations listed below, with the funds going to any relief organization working to support Nepal, rather than the coworking facility.

Nepal is still in complete chaos as it struggles to restore order following the disaster. Both Google and Facebook have implemented technological programs to help people connect with those who might have been in the affected area.

The fundraising plan is pretty simple and there’s no middle man. Here’s how it’s described on the website:

Register on Eventbrite for the coworking space you want to work from. Then simply show proof of a Nepal relief donation when you arrive on May 6th. Spaces will be open on Wednesday, May 6th from 10:00am – 5:00pm for Coworking for Nepal participants. Space is limited so we recommend you register now!

That’s it. The site links to donations to Global Giving’s Earthquake Relief Fund, but the plan is to accept proof of any contribution to organizations working on Nepal relief.

DUMBO Startup Lab founder John Coghlan alerted us to the effort. “The idea to host a day of coworking in support of Nepal relief felt so right that I knew other coworking spaces would get behind it,” Coghlan wrote. “I’m hopeful that the startup and freelance communities will embrace the cause and together we can make a contribution to those in need in Nepal.”

There is, of course, nothing stopping you from giving to the fund (here) without actually showing up at a coworking space.

Participating coworking spaces, as of this writing, are:
