Colocation Series NY1 #1 is a video piece using appropriated footage of a virtual tour of a data center, which was meant to allure prospective financial industry customers. The original footage is a 360-degree tour, while this piece arranges its imagery into a kaleidoscopic pattern, with a soundtrack of computer sounds.
The work is by Genevieve Hoffman, a member of Bed-Stuy coworking space, Brooklyn Research. We covered the space in September.
Hoffman also collaborated on an interesting hardware and digital currency project, Metro Change, which made it easy for commuters to donate the pennies left on their Metro cards to charity (and also to recycle used cards). The impetus for this program may be somewhat dampened now that the MTA is incentivizing New Yorkers to hold onto their cards with a $1 new card fee, however. The project’s Twitter feed has been dormant since 2012.
