ScriptEd expands its STEM curriculum to Academy of Innovative Technology

ScriptEd, which STEM learning volunteers in under-resourced schools, has expanded its after school coding program to the Academy of Innovative Technology in Cypress Hills this semester. We learned about the new site after seeing the nonprofit’s founder, Maurya Couvares, at NY Tech Day last month.

We previously reported on the group’s 2013 hackathon and its program at Brooklyn International High School.

In an email to Technically Brooklyn, Couvares said that the new Brooklyn program has 15 students involved and three volunteers. The total program has 100 students and 35 volunteers citywide.

While the curriculum for the program has not changed much since we reported on the group last semester, updates are coming. Couvares wrote us, “We’re working on putting out version 2.0 of the curriculum this summer. The curriculum is generally the same in every school — We give our volunteers a lot of liberty to put their own spin on things, but the concepts being taught are all the same.”

ScriptEd’s volunteers are mostly drawn from tech professionals. The group just ran another hackathon this weekend in Mahattan. The theme was “Random().”
