Carnegie Mellon is opening a new campus up at the Navy Yard, inside Steiner Studios, which is growing thanks to the departure of another company.

Students will go there for a one-semester or one-year long workshop that combines academics with hands-on activities alongside Steiner pros. They call it the Carnegie Mellon Integrative Media Program, saying it is “the first Applied Sciences project to integrate rigorous academics seamlessly into a specialized commercial working environment, offering students the opportunity to work alongside professionals in the field,” in a press release.

“What’s different about this, besides the integrated physical component, is it’s really a convergence play, where media and design and visual arts intersect with math and technology. There will be classes and exercises in digital fabrication.” Kyle Kimball, president of New York City’s Economic Development Corp., said in Crain’s.

Thanassis Rikakis, Vice Provost for Design, Arts and Technology at Carnegie Mellon will oversee the program, which will begin accepting students in August 2015.

The initial master’s degrees will offer options for one year, one semester and part-time study in NYC. Courses of studies will include new degrees in emerging media and game design, and expanded versions of existing degrees in integrated innovation in products and services, urban design, computational data science and production technology and management.
