In creating advertising and marketing materials for brands and businesses around Baltimore, creative agency Kapowza has tapped into a key way to make a splash when launching a new product: Just add a +.

The Baltimore-based creative agency is marking April 1 with the launch of a new streaming service.

Kapowza+ is a new web platform that is home to the Brewers Hill-based agency’s commercials and video content. That includes commercials it has produced for Northrop Realty, as well as the Between Two Founders video series that ran through a partnership with Technical.ly.

The agency’s leaders say they are aiming to follow in the footsteps of services like of AMC+, AppleTV+, Disney+, Discovery+, BET+, Paramount+ and even Quibi (RIP). But the crowded market means a special offer is necessary to entice viewers, so commercials will be presented commercial-free for 73 days.

“With traditional cable packages going the way of the dinosaur, we knew now was the best time to launch our own platform before anyone else stole such a great name,” said Kapowza President Dan Schepleng. “Never again will we need to provide links to individual spots, or worry about website traffic for our main site, we’ll just ask them to join us ‘at the plus.’ Do you like that tagline? I’m workshopping a few.”

It’s a big shift from a creative agency to a streaming service, but the principals figured, “Why the hell not.” Asked about the market interest that led to the launch of the service, Partner Sean Sutherland said, “Nobody asked for this and I don’t know why we’ve done this.”

Editor’s note: April Fools! Kapowza isn’t pivoting; we just couldn’t resist running a good gag press release. But the site featuring its work is actually live. Good one, Kapowza.
