Baltimore City Council cybersecurity committee to hold first hearing [Events Roundup]

Fall brings change, and that means local business-building programs are launching new cohorts and graduating their most recent groups of startups. This month, there are plenty of chances to get face-to-face with the members of these programs, and new technology that’s being developed at local universities. Plus, get civically engaged around cybersecurity and trade.

FounderTrac Demo Day

Over the last 12 weeks, 10 startups participated in the accelerator that provides business-building resources, mentorship and access to capital. To close out the cohort, the startup founders will pitch before a panel of investors and celebrate progress.

The Power of Mentorship

This event features a panel discussion by Million Women Mentors, a group that seeks to inspire girls and women to pursue and succeed in STEM careers. Panelists include BGE VP Valencia McClure, Million Women Mentors Senior Director of External Relations & Strategic Brand Engagement Director Ashley Szofer and Protenus Chief People Officer Megan Emhoff.

Baltimore City Council’s Cybersecurity and Emergency Preparedness Committee meeting

Following the ransomware attack against the City of Baltimore, City Council President Brandon Scott formed a new committee focused on cybersecurity, and its members have been meeting with cybersecurity and IT professionals in the months since.

“I’ve asked the committee chairs to conduct a comprehensive review of the vulnerabilities and response that allowed the ransomware attack to have such a devastating impact our city,” Scott said in a statement this week. “Over the next year, the committee will make recommendations on policies, practices, and technology we need to have an IT infrastructure with integrity.”

The first meeting will focus on awareness, prevention and mitigation of cyber attacks. The three-member committee will ask questions about the current status of the city’s IT infrastructure, and recovery from the attack. Members include co-chairs and councilmembers Eric Costello and Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer, as well as Council VP Sharon Green Middleton.

JHU Social Innovation Lab 2019-2020 Cohort Launch

A new cohort of ventures will begin the Johns Hopkins Tech Ventures program that supports companies and nonprofits with social missions in Baltimore and around the world. The event will introduce the 10 social impact teams, and feature two-minute presentations from each cohort member. A reception will follow the announcement.

Baltimore and Beyond Conference

Organized by Innov8MD, the conference puts a spotlight on student entrepreneurs building businesses at universities across Maryland. The event will showcase student-run startups and offer speed mentoring. Each participating venture is also in the running for a Crowd’s Choice award, which includes funding and support services. For attendees, it’s a chance to meet the ventures and network.

Johns Hopkins Digital Health Day: Health Tech Frontiers

The event gathers digital health innovators, with the event centered around a healthcare technology expo that features exhibitors from startups, larger companies and Johns Hopkins. Throughout the day, a demo stage will feature technology including 3D printers, telemedicine robots and virtual reality simulations.

 World Trade Center Institute’s 30th anniversary and State of the Ports

The World Trade Center Institute is celebrating 30 years with international cuisine and entertainment based in Maryland. At 4 p.m., a pair of breakout sessions will feature talks on the Port of Baltimore and BWI for the State of the Ports, as well as trade dynamics in uncertain times. EnterpRISE Venture Competition Final Pitch

Open Works is showcasing 10 manufacturing startups that were selected earlier this year to receive mentorship and pitch for the $10,000 prize. Ventures range from medical devices to educational activities for kids. There’s a total of $18,000 in prizes up for grabs across five winners. Plus, someone will win the Golden Squirrel.

“The Business of Art. The Art of Business.”

Startup Grind Columbia hosts a fireside chat with Mark Greathouse, who went from business and investing to pursuing poetry, history and novelist. There’s lots for folks on both sides to learn from each other, and luckily he’s had a foot in both.

2019 Leonard and Phyllis Attman Competitive Business Prize Pitch Competition

The University of Baltimore Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation runs this annual competition, open to undergraduate and graduate students from across the university who are building a business. At the event, six finalists will pitch to a panel of judges for a chance to win seed funding. Attendees will also get to vote for a crowd favorite, and meet the entrepreneurs at a reception.
