This Week in Jobs: Monster Mash Edition

Clowns, fighter jets and jobs.

Editor’s note: Every week we ship an email newsletter featuring the region’s most exciting career opportunities. We’ve lovingly called it This Week in Jobs (aka TWIJ — “twidge.”). Below is this week’s edition. Here’s the last one we published; it’s meant to live in your inbox. Sign up for the newsletter here.

Ghost Protocol

If you think fending off a ransomware attack or writing bug-free code is tough, try life as a zombie.

The part-time monsters at your friendly neighborhood haunted houses go through — if not quite hell — at least a taste of the Bad Place to give you and your friends a good scare.

“Scaring for five hours straight is exhausting,” said one Baltimore County teacher who moonlights as a “deranged clown” every weekend at Markoff’s Haunted House in Poolesville, Maryland. Here’s hoping a raise comes with raising the dead.

The News

Iceman is apparently feeling the heat. The Department of Defense has asked LMI Ventures and The Climate Service to study how the military’s F-35 joint strike fighter will be challenged, not just by MIGs but by climate change. LMI Ventures, which provides management and tech consulting services to the federal government, was launched in February in partnership with The Climate Service.

If you’re building a business or social venture in Baltimore, you can enter to win a $2,000 stipend, pitch training, networking, a professional portrait session and weekly instruction, courtesy of Loyola University Maryland’s Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE). CIE’s Baltipreneurs Accelerator Program is seeking to support ventures in and around Baltimore. Applications from underrepresented entrepreneurs will be given preference, including women, people of color, people with disabilities and veterans. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Oct. 31.

The Jobs

D.C.

  • The Washington Post is hiring a Scrum Master to monitor scrum processes and scrum meetings.
  • The Washington Post is also seeking a Software Engineer to help build and support its website.
  • ERP International, which is supporting multiple software development projects across the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Administration, is looking for a Java Solution Architect. The position is also available in Laurel, Maryland.
  • Receipt Bank, a paperless bookkeeping platform seeking to “disrupt the world of accounting,” is hiring an Account Manager.

Maryland

  • The coworking space and incubator network 1776 is hiring a Campus Manager to serve as the primary management and coordination lead at its Greencourt Innovation Center, a 15,000 square-foot site in North Bethesda. The position will report to the Campus Director.
  • And if you have at least seven years of experience in small business or organizational leadership, 1776 is also hiring a Campus Director for the Greencourt Innovation Center in North Bethesda.
  • Join what’s obviously the best workplace in the Northeast: Technical.ly is hiring an Editorial Intern for spring 2020. You’ll work with the Technical.ly editors to create digital content for two of Technical.ly’s four markets: Baltimore and D.C., or Philadelphia and Delaware. The position is available in Baltimore or Philadelphia.
  • ERP International is hiring a Java Solution Architect for a position in Laurel. The role is also available in D.C.

The End

The deranged clowns and headless horsemen may not be working for tips, but be kind to your local chainsaw-wielding escaped convict as they try to scare the daylights out of you and your crew. You may get to go home, but they’re doomed to stay for eternity — or at least through the end of the season.

See you next week.
