Power Moves: Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore names CEO, COO

The Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore has a new day-to-day leadership team.

Michele L. Whelley will step into the role of CEO at the regional economic development organization on January 21. Whelley previously served in that role at the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance, Downtown Partnership of Baltimore and the Economic Development Corporation of New Haven. She also served as executive vice president of the Baltimore Development Corporation.

Sharon K. (Markley) Schreiber was appointed as chief operating officer, overseeing day-to-day operations, programming and EAGB marketing efforts. Schreiber previously served as executive vide president at the organization from 2016-2017 before joining the Maryland Department of Commerce as director of education and innovation. In the latter, role, she led outreach to higher education institutions.

Since June, EAGB has been led by interim CEO Bill Jones, who stepped in to succeed prior CEO Shannon Landwehr.

“We spent months searching for the right talent to drive the initiatives of the EAGB and are fortunate to have landed the experience and acumen we were looking for in Michele and Sharon,” Rick Kohr, EAGB board chair, said in a statement. “I want to thank Bill for his tireless efforts as CEO, helping move the organization forward in a very positive way.”

Maryland coworking company Launch Workplaces named Michael Abrams as market development leader. Abrams will help with the company’s business plan, and defining strategy around acquiring real estate assets.

Abrams was previously cofounder and partner at Glenbrook Properties, where he managed and developed real estate including restaurants, retail and offices.

As we’ve reported, Launch Workplaces is a division of 125-year-old Anne Arundel County firm The Brick Companies that seeks to help building owners launch coworking spaces. It currently has six Maryland locations

“Michael joins our team as a very valuable asset during this important growth period for Launch,” CEO Mike Kriel said in a statement. “His background in commercial real estate development paired with his entrepreneurial mindset will help Launch Workplaces set and achieve goals to provide better are more widely available workspaces to those who are seeking culture, collaboration, and success.”

Donna Messner will become CEO of the Baltimore-based Center for Medical Technology Policy on Feb. 1. Messner has worked at the Inner Harbor nonprofit since 2011, and previously held the title of president. She worked with current CEO Sean Tunis running operations, building a staff and spearheading the organization’s strategic plan. Tunis will remain at the center as a senior strategic advisor.

The organization seeks to strengthen clinical research, and engage multiple stakeholders around the effort in the healthcare system.

“Our three-year strategic plan is focused primarily on building our initiatives to develop and promote adoption of core outcome sets, while continuing our research grants and other initiatives,” Messner said. “We have an amazing team in place and a vibrant portfolio to build on.”

SC&H Group had news of a pair of promotions to start the new year.

Erin Charles was promoted to director at the Sparks-based management consulting, audit and tax firm. She leads the company’s audit, accounting, and consulting.

Jeff Bathurst became the director of technology advisory services, which clients strengthen technology strategy.

“Erin and Jeff are not only two talented individuals, but dynamic leaders,” Ronald Causey, CEO and cofounder of SC&H Group said in a statement. “We wanted to recognize their accomplishments knowing they will continue to help propel the company forward with their innovative thinking and broad experience.”
