Tenable plans HQ move to downtown Columbia

The cyber company will relocate in 2019. It's part of plans to bring urban amenities to the suburban area.

Tenable announced plans Friday morning to move its headquarters within Columbia.

The cybersecurity company plans to move from Columbia Gateway Drive to a new building in 2019 that will be constructed as part of the “first high-density, mixed-use neighborhood in downtown Columbia,” according to the company. Tenable will take five floors of a building that is one of three being built in the area known as the Merriweather District.

It’s a sign that Maryland’s growing cybersecurity community fits into wider transformation plans. Howard Hughes Corp. is helming the redevelopment of the 391-acre town center, with a goal of creating an urban environment that’s walkable in the midst of the planned, suburban area.

“Our move to Downtown Columbia will provide a live-work-play environment for employees, accommodate future growth and allow our company to be part of the area’s exciting transformation,” Tenable CFO Steve Vintz said in a statement.

After the company posted a record $250 million raise in 2015, Vintz said the company would need to seek additional space as it grew but voiced a desire to stay in Maryland. The announcement Friday signals a move just down the road. Along with a coming downtown area that has lots of amenities, the company’s statement pointed to the proximity to Fort Meade and the talent around the area as a reason for moving to the area.

“We applaud Tenable for expanding its corporate headquarters in the state of Maryland and continuing to drive economic development in the heart of Howard County,” Gov. Larry Hogan said in a statement.

As of December 2016, the company had 700 employees, though not all are located in Maryland.
