Hear these 6 Maryland incubator ideas at TEDCO’s Entrepreneur Expo

The event, which also includes a full day of early-stage interaction and Stem Cell Symposium, is set for Oct. 25 at the Hilton Baltimore.

TEDCO’s Entrepreneur Expo and Stem Cell Symposium is coming back to Baltimore this week.
The event, organized by the state-backed agency providing support for early-stage entrepreneurs, offers a daylong look at the startup community through a series of panels and talks, as well as session designed to get founders and mentors talking. The event is set to be held Oct. 25 at the Hilton.
This year’s keynote speakers are RedOwl founder Guy Filippelli, who recently joined Forcepoint after the Federal Hill cybersecurity startup was acquired, and Terra’s Kitchen CEO Michael McDevitt.
The expo also features some chances for entrepreneurs to link up with people who can help through “fast pitch” to angel investors and “speed dating” with mentors.
Incubators are also in the mix. TEDCO offered up a challenge to Maryland incubators to come up with a new idea for supporting startups earlier this year, and said it would award $300,000. At the expo, the winner of the challenge will be named. Beforehand, TEDCO named the six finalists, who will also pitch at the event.
Here’s a look at the finalists:

  • TrajectoryNext, a 12-week program to help health and life sciences startups. It’s a collaboration of Betamore, UM Ventures, the Grid, Fast Forward, Johns Hopkins Tech Ventures, and University of Maryland, Baltimore.
  • A group including Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute (MTECH), Inncuvate Consulting, Bowie Business Innovation Center, Maryland Intellectual Property and Legal Resource Center, Prince George’s Community College, and Northrop Grumman wants to create a new program to help startups connect with corporations for partnerships.
  • FounderTrac, a pre-pipeline incubator that would offer curriculum, mentorship, dedicated seed fund and coworking space. It piloted in Annapolis this year, and is a collaboration between. Launch! Annapolis, MCVC partners, Annapolis Ventures, and The Maryland Tech Council.
  •  Ag, aqua and green startups are the focus of an incubator pitched by the Eastern Shore Entrepreneurship Center’s F³ Tech Program and Bethesda Green’s Be Green Hub. It would initially focus on the Eastern Shore, Southern Maryland and Montgomery County initially.
  • Anchor Ventures, a monthly forum modeled on Boston’s Venture Cafe to help attract, retain and train entrepreneurs. It’s a collaboration between Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures, UM Ventures and the University System of Maryland.
  • LaunchPort Accelerator, the Port Covington–based program focused on medical device startups that is launched by MVR Company and The Quinn Group.
