Former Baltimore Ravens All-Pro Ed Reed is going from picking off opposing quarterbacks to picking startups.
The longtime NFL safety provided angel funding for a startup that combines emojis and holograms, according to a release issued Monday.
New York-based Mojiit is developing technology to project emojis from a smartphone. It was founded by Jeremy Greene, who previously started PingTank, which allowed users to overlay animations onto photos and threw parties at an Los Angeles mansion.
“All of my conversations seem to be in emojis,” Reed said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to announce this new technology and to be able to push it forward and change the game with Jeremy and the team.” The amount Reed invested wasn’t disclosed.
Reed, who retired from the NFL in 2014, is among several Baltimore sports stars getting into tech investing after leaving the field. Former Ravens kicker Matt Stover invested in healthcare analytics platform Kermit. And there’s all-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps, who invested in a razor company, released emojis and was recently named to a health IT company’s board.
