Driving to the beach? Use this map

These Maryland construction zones could slow you down, but a slick new Esri map from the State Highway Administration has you covered.

It’s almost time to head out for Memorial Day weekend. But first, there’s the travel.

Like beaches, worksites on the road also get busier with the nicer weather. This can cause some backups.

The Maryland State Highway Administration knows this better than most, as it collects data showing where those sites are located and how disruptive they might be.

For this holiday weekend, the SHA has a new tool to visualize the road work. Using Esri tooks, the e-Road Ready Projects took data that was previously on a static PDF, and turned it into a real-time map, said SHA GIS specialist Marshall Stevenson.

The map represents worksites with cones that users can click on to get info about projects such as what the project is doing and how it affects traffic flow. There’s also an option to enter a destination to show work along the way, or look at the worksites by county.

Right now, there’s data on 165 projects — so heads up.
