GunBail is set to get a hearing before the Baltimore City Council.
As we reported in the fall, the app created by Trevor Brooks creates a system allowing people to trade in a gun to make bail. Brooks participated in ETC’s Accelerate Baltimore program, and raised $40,000 in a crowdfunding campaign last week.
To begin operating, Brooks wants to introduce a pilot in Baltimore. It would require working with government.
At last night’s City Council meeting, there was a sign that Baltimore officials are willing to consider it. Councilman Brandon Scott introduced a resolution that will allow the Council to explore implementing GunBail in Baltimore, which, in our opinion, would make a lot of sense.
“I think we all know that we have a gun problem in Baltimore,” Scott said. “This is a program that’s being touted and created. We want to see if it would work in Baltimore, if it’s the right thing for Baltimore city.”
Scott is among several cosponsors of the resolution. Now a Council committee will hold a hearing to further consider it. Brooks has said that he met with the Baltimore Police Department and State’s Attorney’s office about the program.
With the resolution’s introduction, Brooks was interviewed by WBAL-TV and the Baltimore Sun.
