After hinting at a run for office, Alec Ross announced Wednesday that he is running for governor in next year’s election.
The Baltimore resident and tech policy expert released a video announcing the campaign. The Democrat’s message: “Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is not.”
“My campaign will be about new, innovative ideas to better-prepare all of our students for the new economy, make government more transparent and to stop Donald Trump from imposing his agenda in our state,” he said in a statement.
After teaching at Booker T. Washington Middle School in Baltimore, Ross founded the nonprofit One Economy, which worked on digital divide-related issues in Maryland. He advised the Obama campaign on openness and transparency, then became a Senior Advisor on Innovation in the State Department under Hillary Clinton. He made the best-seller list last year with the book, The Industries of the Future.
While the formal announcement is the first from a Democrat, Ross could face a crowded primary field. The Baltimore Sun reported at least eight Dems are considering jumping into the race. The winner of the primary would face Gov. Larry Hogan in the general election.
