The TEDxJHU website is under construction, but that’s by design in this case.
It’s the theme of the independently-organized TED event held at Johns Hopkins University, which is back this weekend with plenty of tech-connected talks.
The March 11 event at Mudd Hall on Hopkins’ Homewood campus has the theme of “Under Construction.”

The event will feature artwork by Baltimore’s Daniel Stuelpnagel, and local musicians performing during intermission. It’s open to everyone.

Here’s a quick look at the speakers, the majority of whom have tech ties:

  • Natalia Trayanova is director of Johns Hopkins’ Computational Cardiology Laboratory, where the team is working on a personalized virtual heart.
  • Nicola Fox is the principal space scientist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. (You may remember its mission to Pluto.) If that isn’t enough, her work focuses on developing a spacecraft that can touch the frickin’ sun.
  • Braphus Kaalund is foreign service officer at the U.S. State Department focusing on internet connectivity and cybersecurity.
  • Seal Bin-Han founded Baltimore startup FitMango while an undergrad at Johns Hopkins. The startup went through Accelerate Baltimore in 2015.
  • Michelle Geiss is executive director of Impact Hub Baltimore, the Station North incubator that opened last year.
  • Joshua Sharfstein, former secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, is an associate dean of Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health.
  • Shipla Alva is cofounder of Surge for Water, a nonprofit looking to provide clean water and sanitation to undeserved communities.
