Village Capital already has a commitment to Baltimore with a health-focused accelerator that will be run with Johns Hopkins University and the Abell Foundation. The D.C.-based startup-backing organization is also making inroads in the city through its education-focused accelerator.

Village Capital is set to bring its latest edtech cohort to Baltimore from July 26-29, Head of Education Nasir Qadree said last week at a screening of a new documentary about Startup Maryland. The org is partnering with Spark, and is set to host a startup community event on July 28, Qadree said.

Twelve startups were named to the education cohort last week, which is also backed by AT&T and the Kellogg Foundation. The companies will present at the Baltimore event, and programming is also being held in Chicago starting this week. At the end of the program, the startups will self-select two of companies to split $150,000.

Village Capital reps were introduced to Baltimore’s tech scene through last year’s Rise of the Rest tour stop in the city, and shares a desire to grow startup communities that aren’t New York City, San Francisco and Boston. Qadree said the city’s resources to support health and education startups particularly stood out, and they sought to deepen ties.
