Baltimore ranks among the top 15 cities for female technologists, but still has some work to do to catch up with its neighboring locales.

Financial analytics firm SmartAsset ranked Baltimore 12th in its study of the “Best Cities for Women in Tech.” To determine the ranking, publication staff measured four factors: number of tech jobs filled by women, income after housing cost, three-year employment growth and gender pay gap.

Baltimore was above the national average in number of tech jobs filled by women (29.4 percent) and income ($55,371) and gender pay gap (88.4 percent of men’s wages). But the city’s three-year employment growth for women in tech was -3 percent, indicating the city is currently trending slightly downward.

Compared to nearby cities like Washington, D.C. — which ranked 1st — New York and Philadelphia, Baltimore’s tech scene could be more inclusive. But the study notes that Baltimore ranks ahead of other East Coast tech cities like Boston and Raleigh.
