Chesapeake Innovation Center adds 2 members

Joining the Anne Arundel County incubator: the makers of unmanned health clinics and a cloud-based science research tool.

Anne Arundel County’s Chesapeake Innovation Center added two new companies to its Odenton digs in the past week.
MEDEX Spot, which makes an unmanned health clinic, will join the tech incubator as a “Collaboration Hub member,” the two entities announced Monday. Hippocampus Analytics, which builds tools to help scientists manage data and hold private discussions to communicate their findings, also joined the Hub last week.

Founded in 2010, MEDEX Spot invented the Unmanned Micro Clinic. Contained inside a “cabin,” the soundproof, self-service clinic includes teleconference technology that links patients with a medical professional, and instruments. It’s also self-cleaning.
The clinic, which could be placed in drug stores, supermarkets, big box stores or other public gathering spots, is designed to lower costs for primary care patients who would otherwise visit emergency rooms or urgent care clinics.
“Because of the (Affordable) Healthcare Act and the increasing shortage of primary care physicians, the forecast for telemedicine growth over the next few years presents a large opportunity for innovative companies,” MEDEX Spot cofounder and CEO Charles Nahabedian said in a statement.
A veteran of projects like the first cordless telephone and touch-screen kiosks at Disney World’s EPCOT Center, Nahabedian has a management team in place. He’s looking for that team to tap the Chesapeake Innovation Center team as he grows further.
“I am at a point now where I need good advice, expert guidance and extended partnerships so that I can find more qualified investors,” Nahabedian said.
The CIC also offers support for companies at an even earlier stage. Hippocampus CEO Diana Ma founded her company in spring 2014 after a 15-year career as a neurophysiologist. She developed a cloud-based data management and communication system that’s based in part on her own experience, and listening to the needs of other researchers.
“The Collaboration Hub membership level is designed specifically for very early stage companies like Hippocampus Analytics,” CIC Acting Executive Director Allison Hartrick said in a release. “This type of company has a basic business concept but needs more guidance in developing its business plan and technology.”
The Chesapeake Innovation Center cut the ribbon on its new location in Odenton last September. Other Collaboration Hub members include the insurance marketplace QuotePie, and ReXi Wireless, which makes a public WiFi portal gateway.
