Nonprofit founder, exoneree among 10 Baltimore winners of BMe grants

The Miami-based group supporting black leaders issued $10,000 prizes to 30 activists and entrepreneurs in Baltimore, Detroit and Philadelphia.

Lance Lucas, founder of Digit All Systems, with one of the many laptops his organization has given away since its founding. On Monday, Lucas won a $10,000 BMe Leader Award.

Ten Baltimore men each received $10,000 grants for their community building efforts, the organization BMe Community announced Monday.

The grants, given to black activists in Baltimore, were among 30 BMe Leader Awards issued by the Miami-based group. BMe also awarded grants in Detroit and Philadelphia.

The awardees include Walter Lomax, who spent over 40 years in prison after a wrongful conviction in a 1968 shooting. He will use the grant to support a reentry counseling program for prisoners. Grantee Chris Wilson will use his award to expand the Barclay Business School, an incubator for teaching skills to aspiring entrepreneurs. Lance Lucas, founder of the nonprofit Digit All Systems, will use his award to fund certifications for computer technicians in Baltimore city schools.

In 2012, Technical.ly Baltimore wrote a series of features on Lucas’ work.
