Venture for America makes first Baltimore fellow placement at cybersecurity startup Riskive

In an e-mail Riskive founder James Foster said Gustafson had listed Riskive as her top choice for the VFA fellowship.

Philadelphia was recently added as the eighth VFA fellowship city.
Full disclosure: Betamore cofounder Mike Brenner is a partner with Technically Baltimore, which works on occasion from the Federal Hill-based incubator.

Riskive, the Betamore-based cybersecurity startup, is the first Baltimore company to receive a Venture for America fellow.

Clara Gustafson is a science, technology and international affairs major at Georgetown University‘s School of Foreign Service graduating this spring. She’s originally from Portland, Ore., and spent two years of high school in China taking classes in Mandarin (as in, Mandarin language classes and classes taught in Mandarin).
In an e-mail, Riskive chief executive officer James Foster said Gustafson had listed Riskive as her startup of choice for the VFA fellowship.
“In our fight to safeguard the United States, her organizations, allies and citizens, we need the world’s very best talent,” he said. “Venture for America embodies our core value system and as such we knew their fellows would be passionate, innovative and have the work ethic of champions.”
Now in its second year, the nonprofit VFA places college graduates in two-year work commitments with startups nationwide, as Technically Baltimore reported last summer. The fellowship program is now in eight cities, with Baltimore, Cleveland and Philadelphia being the three expansion cities for 2013.
Here are the startups in Baltimore set to receive VFA fellows:

  • Baltimore Astrum Solar
  • Parking Panda
  • SocialToaster
  • Pixelligent
  • Reify Health (another Betamore-based startup)
  • Vigilant Medical
  • Riskive

In its first year, VFA placed 40 fellows in startups in Las Vegas, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Detroit and Providence. This year VFA expects to place roughly 70 fellows in all eight cities, according to BmoreMedia.
