East Coasters dwelled indoors Monday, waiting out Hurricane Sandy as she drenched several states along the northeast coastline.
But as people followed the storm through Twitter and fake Instagram photos, a team of hackers set to work putting together both a timeline of Sandy’s formation and trajectory as well as a map cataloging the live streams that have been set up thus far for tracking the hurricane, overlaid on a color-coded map depicting the relative wind speed of Sandy at different locations. Both projects, right now, are working demos yet to be completed.

The hackers, several of whom are working out of the Boston, Mass., area, have been coordinating their efforts through an open Google Doc organized by Sasha Costanza-Chock, an assistant professor at MIT. Incidentally, Costanza-Chock lost power midway through Monday afternoon.
