Nine new companies joined the incubator at the University of Maryland Baltimore County between March and June, reports Bmore Media. With the additional nine, this brings the total of companies that have participated in UMBC’s incubator program to 100.

Of the nine new companies, five are in cybersecurity and the rest are in IT, says Ellen Hemmerly, executive director of bwtech@UMBC. Hemmerly attributes the interest in cybersecurity to the proximity of the U.S. Army and Department of Defense agencies at Fort Meade and the academic talent at the university. [more]

The incubator at UMBC is housed on the campus’s 71-acre Research and Technology Park. Opened in 1989, the park now offers office and laboratory space to early-stage tech and bioscience firms, and three separate incubator programs are offered—life science and tech, cyber with tech-related state and federal activities and clean energy—along with an accelerator program for tech companies no longer in the early stage phase of growth.
