Chris Tonjes named new Chief Technology Officer for Baltimore City

He currently serves as the chief information officer for Washington, D.C.'s public library system and is coming in a year after a predecessor Rico Singleton left around allegations of impropriety in the office.

Chris Tonjes has been appointed the new Chief Information Officer in the Mayor’s Office of Information Technology, according to a press release from the mayor’s office.

“We are excited to announce the appointment of a qualified and forward-thinking individual to oversee an increasingly important government agency,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake in the release. “Chris comes to us with years of experience as an innovator for one of the country’s oldest public library systems. His understanding of the needs of a modern urban municipality will be critical as we develop strategies to make city government more effective and efficient.”

Tonjes currently serves as the chief information officer for Washington, D.C.’s public library system. During his tenure there, he managed the creation of the first-ever iPhone app for a library, and oversaw app creation for the iPad and Blackberry phone. Before his work with the D.C. Public Library system, Tonjes was the program manager for the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer.

Tonjes begins his work in Baltimore City on July 23.
