Back in March, SmartAsset found that Baltimore ranks 12th in the country for women in tech. A new SmartAsset report looking at diversity in the STEM fields across the board bumps us up to sixth.
In the ranking of the Top 10 Cities for Diversity in STEM, Baltimore falls just behind East Coast neighbors (and fellow Technical.ly markets) Philly and D.C.

On racial and ethnic diversity, the ranking shows that Baltimore is far above the national average in employing African-Americans in the STEM fields. SmartAsset’s data indicate that the STEM workforce is 27 percent black in Baltimore, while the national average is just 6 percent. We should mention that this still nowhere near the makeup of the city, which is 63.3 percent black, according to the latest Census figures.
The city falls below the national average in numbers of Asian and Latino STEM workers. Nine percent of the city’s STEM workers are Asian, compared with a national average of 15 percent. Meanwhile, the Baltimore STEM workforce is 3 percent Latino, compared with 7 percent on average.
SmartAsset points out the fact that Baltimore’s gender diversity is well above the national average, with 37 percent of STEM workers being women compared with 26 percent nationally.
