It’s Preakness week in Baltimore.

Like many big events, the second leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown will look a bit different this year. Attendance on Saturday is limited to 10,000 people on race day, and the usual InfieldFest is now the socially-distanced Preakness Live.

But even with changes to adjust for the times, there’s still room to introduce something new for fans. According to the AP, Preakness this week became the first horse race to put up NFTs for auction as digital souvenirs. NFTs, or nonfungible tokens, are “digital verification that an item is authentic and unique,” as Technical.ly reported. In the case of Preakness, there will be 17 of those items available, including full race videos, and a Preakness horse for the digital racing game Zed Run. Along with auctions that offer some bidding opportunity, Preakness is looking to connect with younger fans at a time that NFTs continue to rise in popularity.

The Highs & Lows of a High-Tech Maryland: Setting the Stage for Workplace & Socioeconomic Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

This week, the Maryland Tech Council announced the launch of the Technology Inclusivity Initiative. Led by Stacey Smith, the former CEO of Cybersecurity Association of Maryland, Inc., the initiative “will work to identify, facilitate and enable technology-based solutions that enable socioeconomic advancement and empowerment of underrepresented groups who have significant potential,” a news release states. That work is kicking off with a panel discussion including Winston Phillip, the preisdent of Sequivalent and a key proponent of the City of Baltimore’s My Digital Data Locker platform for people experiencing homelessness, as well as represntatives form the Technology Policy Institute and Baltimore Tracks. Plus, LaToya Staten, Strategic Projects Specialist at Baltimore digital services agency Fearless and the initiative’s steering committee chair, will present the initiative’s action plan.

The League of Women Voters chapters from Baltimore city and county present an event with featured speaker Alex Marré, Ph.D., a regional economist at the Baltimore branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Marré will discuss “the many barriers urban and rural residents face in accessing the Internet, as well as state and national efforts to increase access,” per the event description.
